Advisers to sit on Macao’s national security committee

BEIJING – The Chinese central government has decided that the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the Macao Special Administrative Region shall have a national security affairs adviser and three national security technical advisers.

The central government made the decision in a reply dated Nov 30 to the Macao SAR, regarding a report he filed proposing that the central government set up posts of national security affairs adviser and national security technical adviser in the committee.

In the reply, the central government said it approved the report.

The post of national security affairs adviser should be taken by the director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, while the national security technical advisers should be relevant personnel of the Liaison Office, according to the reply.

The national security affairs adviser shall be in charge of supervising, guiding, coordinating, and supporting the Macao SAR in safeguarding national security, it added.

The duties of the national security technical adviser include assisting the national security affairs adviser and advising on matters pertaining to the duties and functions of the office of the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the Macao SAR.

The national security affairs adviser shall sit in on meetings of the Committee, and the national security technical advisers shall sit in on meetings of the office of the Committee.

The reply also said the chief executive of the Macao SAR shall revise relevant regulations of the SAR in accordance with relevant provisions of the Basic Law of the Macao SAR as well as the reply.
