Over 38,000 medics arrive to help Shanghai

More than 38,000 medics from across China arrived in Shanghai on Monday to assist in the testing and treatment of COVID-19, as the city steps up the fight against the toughest battle in the past two years.

Over 11,000 medics have assumed responsibility for work in temporary hospitals, and over 23,000 medical workers are responsible for collecting nucleic acid samples, according to Jiao Yahui, a senior NHC official. And nearly 4,000 people have been dispatched to support the work in the COVID-19 testing lab.

Seeveral provinces like Hubei, Jiangxi, Shandong and Hainan have dispatched medical teams to the city, including not only nucleic acid testing professionals but also doctors and nurses to give care and treatment to COVID-19 patient admitted in hospitals.

Nucleic acid testing teams with a daily handling capacity of 2.38 million test tubes have also been mobilized, the commission said.

Nucleic Acid Testing

Shanghai on Monday finished the basic collection of samples for nucleic acid testing from its nearly 25 million residents, local authorities said on Monday night.

"With the active cooperation of the local residents, the city finished the latest round of nucleic acid sampling work on April 4," the office of the Shanghai municipal leading group for COVID-19 prevention and control said in a statement.

Shanghai conducted the citywide nucleic acid testing on Monday after a mass antigen testing on Sunday. The city has been placed under temporary closed-off management after surging COVID-19 infections were logged in recent days.

Further work, including testing, multiple checks, the transportation of positive cases, and the analysis and assessment of the COVID-19 situation, will be carried out in an orderly manner, according to the statement.

After all work is completed, follow-up control measures will be released based on relevant national regulations and the results of the mass screening.

The city has designated around 10 hospitals, including Fang Cang makeshift ones, for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Shanghai reported 9,006 new infections on Sunday, with 8,581 cases being asymptomatic, the municipal health commission announced on Monday.
