Flutter Entertainment Successfully Defends Data Protection Practices in Appeal

(AsiaGameHub) -   Sky Betting and Gaming (SBG), a subsidiary of Flutter Entertainment, has successfully secured a significant legal victory. The Court of Appeal of England and Wales determined that a gambling addiction does not nullify a user's consent to receive marketing materials. This ruling reverses a prior High Court judgment that had deemed SBG's actions unlawful. The previous decision focused on the company's use of cookies, tracking technologies, and targeted promotional messages sent to a problem gambler identified as RTM. The judges clarified that under UK data protection regulations, consent is assessed objectively. It relies on an individual's conduct rather than their psychological condition. Lord Justice Warby criticized the earlier ruling for relying on a "legally mistaken approach." He stated that when establishing consent, data controllers are not required to demonstrate the specific thoughts or intentions of the individual. The legal action originated from RTM's allegations that SBG's data handling practices exacerbated his gambling issues and caused financial damage. Although the High Court initially supported his claims, the appeal court rejected this logic and dismissed all five grounds of the appeal. This verdict may have broad consequences regarding how companies understand and apply user consent. The matter is now set to return to the High Court to address outstanding claims related to fair data processing. This article is provided by a third-party. 251 illegal gambling sites are shut down by Argentina

(AsiaGameHub) -   Argentina's National Communications Agency (ENACOM) has confirmed it has blocked 251 unlicensed gambling websites. Officials verified that all of these sites were operating without official approval within the province of Buenos Aires. The probe, headed by San Isidro cybercrime prosecutors, confirmed that these platforms offered Argentine users casino-style games, sports betting markets, and the common promise of hassle-free withdrawals. For average users, there were almost no obvious signs that anything was improper. Authorities discovered that most of these platforms operated without any real oversight. Investigators have repeatedly found cases where users were completely unable to withdraw their funds. The money appears to have vanished entirely into unregulated, untracked systems. Illegal gambling is not a new problem in Argentina, but the shift to unregulated online gambling has made it much harder to control. Buenos Aires officials note that this is why coordinated action between agencies is so important. The blocking of 251 websites is a major step and a remarkable development in the country's crackdown on illegal gambling. This action helps bring a large share of the illegal gambling market under regulatory control. This article is provided by a third-party. Ukraine’s Gaming Authority Suspends Cosmolot Casino and Imposes Fines

(AsiaGameHub) -   Ukraine’s PlayCity, the state agency responsible for overseeing gambling activities, has revoked the license of SpaceX LLC—the company behind the Cosmolot brand—after auditors identified violations of settlement rules, including the use of peer-to-peer payment methods. PlayCity head Gennadiy Novikov stated: A gambling license requires operations to adhere to legally established requirements. Our role is to ensure consistent and transparent supervision of license holders so that the market functions under uniform rules for all participants. Gambling activity in Ukraine is regulated by the Law “On State Regulation of Activities for the Organization and Conduct of Gambling.” The agency can impose financial penalties for violations and, in serious cases, revoke licenses. Acting Minister of Digital Transformation Oleksandr Bornyakov commented: To make this oversight even more effective, the Ministry of Digital Transformation has developed amendments to the core gambling law. The goal is to further strengthen regulation in the area of betting and tighten requirements for vetting gambling organizers. In addition to losing its gaming license, Cosmolot was fined a total of UAH 12.9 million for violations involving peer-to-peer payment transactions and accepting deposits via third-party banking instruments. Cosmolot’s suspension came shortly after another licensed lottery company (PlayCity) was suspended from lottery approval pending further investigations into the legality of its business operations. Cosmolot had only recently obtained its gaming license at the end of January this year. Originally, there were three approved lottery companies: Patriot, MSL, and the Ukrainian National Lottery. According to Interfax-Ukraine reports, all three paid the mandatory license fee of UAH 24.2 million ($554,000). With Cosmolot joining Patriot in losing their gaming licenses, PlayCity has temporarily suspended two licensed lottery operations. A review of all company licenses will take place as part of this crackdown, and there are also plans for a fully online licensing process that will replace paper-based applications, queues, and in-person visits. The new system being developed by the Ministry of Digital Transformation and PlayCity will allow companies to register via their personal accounts in minutes, using data from the State Register’s central database that is automatically checked instead of manually verified. Last month, PlayCity and YouTube announced they would partner to develop a method for blocking illegal gambling advertisements. This article is provided by a third-party. SportyBet遭遇法庭挫折,9亿奈拉纠纷仍未解决

(AsiaGameHub) -   In 2024, SportyBet Nigeria blocked the accounts of multiple customers before launching legal action against them, alleging the users manipulated the platform to secure large payout sums. The affected users, who claim they are owed more than N900 million in total winnings, rejected the accusations and brought their case to social media to seek public support. With no settlement reached between the two sides, SportyBet escalated the dispute to court. The company applied for an ex parte order to bar the customers from speaking publicly about the issue, accused the users of financial misconduct, and is also seeking N50 million in damages. In its official court filing, SportyBet asked the court to prevent the customers from making additional statements or posting about the dispute online, while upholding its allegations of misconduct and continuing to pursue financial compensation. However, the court dismissed all of SportyBet's claims, finding the betting operator failed to submit sufficient evidence to back its assertions. The judge ruled that “the claimant is not entitled to any of the reliefs… This suit is dismissed.” Despite bringing allegations of system manipulation against the customers, SportyBet presented no evidence to prove its claim. Court records also show the company did not pursue arguments related to a cyberattack, and instead relied on unproven defamation claims. As a result, the dispute over the reported N900 million in winnings remains unresolved. This article is provided by a third-party. Joaquim Agut: CIRSA’s Share Price Fails to Reflect the PLC’s True Value

(AsiaGameHub) -   “CIRSA is significantly undervalued,” Chairman Joaquim Agut told investors of the historic Spanish gambling group. This message was conveyed at the first shareholders' meeting of Grupo CIRSA, which finalized its first accounts on the Spanish stock exchange in 2025, following its long-awaited IPO in July. During the meeting, Agut announced a special dividend of €75 million for investors, amounting to €0.45 per share, representing approximately 35% of the €118 million in adjusted net profit recorded in the FY2025 accounts. 2025 was a landmark year for CIRSA, which solidified its status as Spain's largest gambling company by reporting corporate income of €2.3 billion and record EBITDA of €736 million, a 7% rise compared to the previous year. CIRSA victim of wider anxieties  This peak financial performance occurred against the backdrop of a transformative IPO for Spanish gambling, as CIRSA debuted on the Spanish stock exchange at €15 per share, achieving a valuation of €2.5 billion and entering the IBEX Top 50. However, despite these achievements, the CIRSA share price has remained stagnant in the €13-to-€14 range, a situation Agut believes severely undervalues the company's prospects. Agut, who has served as Executive Chairman of CIRSA since Blackstone's private equity acquisition in 2018, believes the current undervaluation reflects broader investor concerns regarding the gambling sector rather than CIRSA's underlying performance. As a listed gambling company, Agut noted that CIRSA has been exposed to persistent sector anxieties, emphasizing that “the company's stock market performance does not reflect its operational reality” – a situation driven not by internal factors, but by the wider dynamics shaping global gambling markets. He specifically pointed to “the emergence of predictive betting models in the United States and increased gambling taxes in the United Kingdom,” developments he said have triggered widespread declines across listed gambling stocks since the start of 2026.  Proven player with undervalued strategy  Despite these pressures, Agut has maintained that CIRSA has consistently outperformed both market conditions and listed peers, sustaining a clear growth trajectory since 2018. He added that he remains confident that investors will ultimately recognize the group's intrinsic value. “The IPO allowed the company to reduce its financial burden while maintaining a high level of investment to support growth, alongside lower debt and the continuation of a strong shareholder return policy,” Agut continued. Consequently, CIRSA has fulfilled its strategic pledge to become the highest-valued Spanish gambling group, underpinned by a disciplined, value-led M&A strategy that continues to shape its expansion profile. Growth has been driven by targeted acquisitions across core and emerging markets, with 17 deals completed in 2025 and early 2026, including four new casino assets in Peru, Casino Marrakech, and Spanish gaming machines distributor Comatel. Under Agut's tenure, CIRSA has executed over 150 acquisitions, with management maintaining that each has been earnings accretive while strengthening the group's footprint across Latin America, Africa, and Southern Europe.  This strategy has positioned CIRSA as one of the most geographically diversified operators among European-listed gambling firms. These transactions reflect a clear focus on scalable assets capable of delivering immediate earnings contribution “We have built a model where growth is both disciplined and repeatable,” Agut stated. “Our M&A strategy is focused on assets that complement our operational strengths and deliver sustainable value over the long term.” All eyes on Blackstone Currently, Blackstone holds 74% of CIRSA's share capital, while institutional investors account for 21%, and retail investors make up the remaining 5%. In Spain, analysts continue to scrutinize how Blackstone will ultimately divest its majority stake. Addressing the recent sale of a 4% holding, Agut reiterated that such a move had already been outlined in the IPO prospectus, “so it should not surprise the market.” Attention will now turn to Blackstone's next steps and its positioning within global gambling equities – an asset class facing renewed pressure from macroeconomic headwinds, including rising energy costs and inflation, which are certain to have deep impacts in Spain and Latin America. Despite these external challenges, Agut remains confident that CIRSA can sustain its growth trajectory and outperform both domestic competitors and listed global peers The investment case is further supported by analyst sentiment, as “14 banks covering the stock maintain “buy” recommendations and set an average target price of €20.6 per share – almost 50% above current trading levels..  Agut concluded that “Cirsa has improved its financial profile with lower debt, reduced financing costs, and greater flexibility, while gaining institutional visibility  at a time when the listed gambling sector has faced external turbulence”. Cambodia intensifies casino crackdown following China’s call for action

(AsiaGameHub) -   Cambodian authorities have closed 91 casinos alleged to be facilitating online fraud networks, shortly after China called for stricter measures against cross-border gambling. As reported by the Xinhua News Agency, Phnom Penh has additionally conducted raids on 250 online scam centers over the last nine months and expelled more than 13,000 foreigners connected to these operations. During a visit to the Cambodian Prime Minister last Wednesday (22 April), Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pressed the leader and his administration to enhance their crackdown on cross-border gambling and online fraud, framing them as public safety concerns. The Cambodian government has consistently pledged to tackle scam compounds operating within its borders, a commitment strengthened by the enactment of its inaugural cybercrime law aimed at prosecuting online scam offenders. The specific casinos affected by the closures are not yet public, but shutting down 91 venues is a component of a broader Cambodian government initiative to combat unlawful gambling. This effort has gained urgency after recent findings connected numerous nationwide casinos to serious abuses associated with scam compounds. Nevertheless, ongoing allegations about scam centers in Cambodia indicate that Phnom Penh faces a protracted struggle as it devises new strategies to curb illegal gambling. Measures by Cambodian authorities aim to alter the course and disrupt the growth of scam centers, which expanded rapidly after the ban on online gambling licenses in 2019. The presence of many operators has persisted since then, and the spread of these scam centers has become a detrimental burden on the national economy. Despite government initiatives, Cambodia continues to be an attractive location due to gaps in its regulatory system and its geographical closeness to Mainland China and Vietnam. While government intervention is crucial, enforcement efforts are largely reactive, attempting to close a gap after allowing these centers a multi-year head start. Yi's trip is part of a larger Chinese campaign to rally Southeast Asian nations for regional collaboration against transnational cybercrime. His regional tour also included meetings with high-level officials from Myanmar and Thailand. Per Xinhua, Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Tin Maung stressed his nation's dedication to escalating its fight against online gambling and telecommunications fraud. He added that Myanmar would "never allow any activities that harm China’s interests" on its soil. A major driver behind China's push to prevent Cambodia and other Southeast Asian nations from becoming hubs for gambling and casino-related crime is the growing evidence that Chinese citizens are frequently leading these criminal ventures in the region. The recent cooperation between China and Cambodia in apprehending and extraditing Chen Zhi underscores a distinct strategic partnership between the two countries. Additionally, China's drive to maintain certain standards in Southeast Asia's gambling scene helps secure Macau's continued prosperity as the region's premier gambling destination. Last year, President Xi notably intervened in the development of Thailand's ultimately failed land-based casino bill, cautioning about the potential for regulated gambling to increase local crime—an action widely interpreted as safeguarding Macau's status. Cost-saving initiatives move The Star closer to achieving positive EBITDA

(AsiaGameHub) -   The Star Entertainment Group has begun to realize the benefits of its cost-reduction strategies, as its EBITDA showed a marked improvement during the third quarter compared to the same timeframe last year, despite remaining in negative territory. Among the cost-cutting steps taken by the Australian casino firm is a refinancing deal with WhiteHawk Capital Partners. This follows binding long-term agreements with Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Limited and Far East Consortium International Limited concerning the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane and Gold Coast properties. Organizational streamlining occurred at the group’s headquarters, which are now under fresh management following the finalization of a A$300m strategic investment from Bally’s Corporation and Investment Holdings late last year. In its report, The Star stated: “Additional measures, such as those targeting administrative roles at each site and prospects for lowering indirect costs and vendor outlays, are still being investigated to bolster The Star's long-term financial health and further solidify the group’s fiscal standing.” The Star sees EBITDA growth For the third quarter ending March 31, 2026, The Star posted revenue of AUS$266m (roughly €163.2m), representing a 12% decline from the second quarter ($301m) and a 1% drop year-over-year (Q3 2025: $268m). Nevertheless, EBITDA rose by 96% year-over-year to a $1m loss (compared to a $24m loss in Q3 FY25) before accounting for significant items. As of March 31, 2026, available cash was $90m. The Star attributed the Q3 performance to a "seasonal dip in revenue and lower gaming traffic in Sydney." While EBITDA improved, the operator reiterated that its "status as a going concern continues to hinge on the resolution of several significant uncertainties," many of which are linked and beyond its influence. Image: Max Stoliar/Shutterstock Performance by location: The Star Sydney: Revenue – $147m, EBITDA – $4m loss. The Star Gold Coast: Revenue – $101m, EBITDA – $8m. The Star Brisbane: Revenue – $15m, EBITDA – $4m loss. Treasury Brisbane: Revenue – $3m, EBITDA – $1m loss. Last month, the New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) once again pushed back the license suspension for The Star Sydney, with Nicolas Weeks set to continue as the facility's manager until September 30, 2026, unless his tenure is ended sooner. NICC Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford remarked at the time: “The current ownership is implementing major operational changes, which the NICC is tracking closely. “This involves efforts to ensure the business is more financially viable over the long term, helping them prove their suitability. We will persist in collaborating with The Star on their remediation goals so the casino can address the grave issues identified in the two Bell inquiries.” This article is provided by a third-party. Habanero Unveils Prosperity Horse, Its Latest Release Featuring an Increasing Multiplier Wild Feature

(AsiaGameHub) -   Habanero, a premier developer of slots and table games, has introduced Prosperity Horse, a high-volatility 7×5 slot centered on expanding features and progressive win mechanics. Featuring 28 to 58 paylines, the game embraces classic themes of luck and fortune, blending Asian-inspired aesthetics with gameplay that escalates from the base game into the bonus round, building toward a thrilling climax. The core of the game is the Prosperity Horse Wild, which locks in place during winning combinations and activates a multiplier that grows with every extra Wild. Additionally, the Red Envelope mechanic is active across the reels, granting instant cash rewards or transforming into high-value symbols, adding further excitement to both the base game and free spins. Triggering the Free Spins feature requires landing three or more scatter symbols. Romania’s ONJN Targets Illegal Gambling Market in Initial Year

(AsiaGameHub) -   According to a recent report covering April 2025 to April 2026, Romania’s National Office for Gambling (ONJN) intensified its focus on strengthening enforcement measures and safeguarding players during its inaugural year of activity. Leveraging new powers granted by updated legislation, the ONJN has blacklisted over 300 unlicensed websites and issued more than 60 orders to remove illegal content. Furthermore, the office launched inquiries into taxation and gross gaming revenues (GGR), which led to the revocation of 60 licenses and the submission of 70 criminal complaints. A state-funded initiative named “Aware and Free” was established by the ONJN as a preliminary responsible gambling program. With a budget of five million euros, the program addresses research, treatment, and prevention. The ONJN has processed a backlog of roughly 54,000 self-exclusion requests currently in the system. Additionally, it has suggested a consolidated framework featuring harsher penalties and more rigorous identity verification. Vlad-Cristian Soare, the president of the ONJN, stated: We have seen this year that change is achievable. It is not an easy path and is met with resistance. There have been obstacles and opposition, as well as efforts to hinder critical projects from both inside and outside the organization. However, the course has stayed true, projects remain ongoing, and the investigations and measures started must be seen to completion. This article is provided by a third-party. Midnite becomes the first betting company to place a wager in space

(AsiaGameHub) -   Betting brand Midnite has notched up a first for the global betting industry after placing a bet in space, as part of a campaign to highlight its cutting-edge digital capabilities. The company sent a custom-constructed device into the upper atmosphere, which climbed to 124,000 feet above ground. Fitted with a mechanical astronaut hand, the device successfully placed a live bet via the Midnite app, staking on England to win the FIFA World Cup at odds of 6/1. The campaign features former England midfielder Gareth Barry, and showcases the platform’s user-friendliness and innovative design. Callum Wilson, Senior PR Manager at Midnite, commented: By sending our app into space, we are demonstrating to our customers that we are truly Built Different. At Midnite, we have big ambitions to stand out from our competitors, and becoming the first app ever to place a bet in space felt like a great way to prove that. Our design and product teams are incredibly proud of the app we have built, and showcasing its capabilities in the stratosphere is a perfect reflection of where Midnite aims to go as a brand. Of course, the World Cup is a massive moment for sports fans all over the world, and excitement is building no matter where you are – whether that’s at home, abroad, or even in space! It was fantastic to work with Gareth Barry, whose confidence in Tuchel’s side led him to back England to win the World Cup, and if the bet comes in, Midnite will donate £10,000 to the Bobby Moore fund as part of this campaign. Gareth Barry, former England midfielder who represented his country at the 2010 World Cup, added: I’m confident this England side has everything it takes to win the World Cup. They now have plenty of major tournament experience, and they have a world-class manager to help them take that next step forward. Just like Midnite, I think this squad is Built Different, so I wanted to back them in a way that’s never been done before. Getting the chance to place a charity bet on England winning is great, but seeing Midnite actually pull this off in space is amazing. I couldn’t believe it when I watched the thumb move to place the bet in such a stunning setting. The app is clearly built different, working perfectly at that extreme height. I think England are too, which is why I believe they can go all the way. Midnite is making waves in the betting industry, and being part of a campaign like this where they keep pushing boundaries is something I’m really pleased to be involved in. The mission was delivered in partnership with Sent Into Space, as Midnite continues to establish itself as an innovation-led betting platform. This article is provided by a third-party. KSA Steps In Over Holland Casino and Vbet’s Own Goal Betting Offers

(AsiaGameHub) -   The Netherlands’ gaming regulator, the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has stepped in due to concerns about potential match-fixing linked to Holland Casino Online and Vbet offering bets on own goals. An external report examined the operators’ practice of offering bets on players scoring own goals; the KSA then reviewed the report’s conclusions and found that such bets violate permitted gambling categories because they are considered negative events with a greater likelihood of being manipulated. The investigation further revealed that Holland Casino Online and Vbet are the only licensed gambling providers in the Netherlands that have regularly permitted bets on own goal occurrences. Following contact from the KSA, both operators have removed own goal bets from their platforms and put in place measures to stop these bets from being reintroduced. The KSA observed that both operators were cooperative, addressed the issue quickly, and no further enforcement steps will be necessary. The KSA’s actions align with its Sports Betting Integrity Policy, released in December 2025, which outlines banned sports betting categories under Dutch legislation. Skillz secures $420M verdict against Papaya Gaming in false advertising case

(AsiaGameHub) -   A New York jury has found in favor of Skillz in its legal dispute with Papaya Gaming, granting $420 million in damages. The jury also suggested potential disgorgement amounts of $719 million and $652 million, which Judge Denise Cote will evaluate before making a final ruling later this summer. Papaya retains the right to contest the verdict in post-trial motions, which could include requests for a mistrial or a lower judgment. Should the court determine a higher disgorgement figure, Skillz will have the option to select that amount instead of the damages award, but cannot collect both. Papaya responded to the verdict, stating: While Papaya respects the jury’s decision, we are disappointed with the outcome. We look forward to court review of the verdict. Papaya will continue to lead with integrity and transparency while remaining focused on our mission to deliver joy through exciting skilled‑based fair competition. The lawsuit centered on the differentiation between various kinds of skill-based games and how the two companies steer clear of being labeled as gambling. Regulators in numerous states have started to examine this distinction, though they are only in the early stages of actively investigating if such games constitute gambling, especially for app-based and arcade-style game companies. Skillz alleged that its business suffered a loss, including a drop in its share price, because Papaya misled the public by claiming it practiced fair matchmaking and definitively used bots for this purpose, while the two companies were not operating under the same principles. Following the verdict, Skillz shares experienced a significant surge. The company welcomed the outcome, stating: Skillz is pleased with the jury’s verdict and the actual damages award of $420 million in our litigation against Papaya Gaming. Skillz proved at trial that Papaya used bots in its games, which is the issue at the core of Skillz’s claims around false advertising, deceptive trade practices and transparency in the skill-based gaming industry. Papaya conducted a multi-year campaign of fraud and false advertising that materially damaged Skillz and the skill-based gaming industry. The court's determination that Skillz's business is not a gambling operation triggered a major market rally for Skillz shares, which climbed from around $3.50 to approximately $13 before settling back to their current price. This volatility resulted in a total value increase for Skillz of roughly $420,023,235. This article is provided by a third-party.
