Belle Corporation’s Q1 Profit Increases 13% Driven by $7.98M Gaming Revenue

(AsiaGameHub) -   Belle Corporation’s latest report indicates a 12% rise ($10.48 million), with total earnings amounting to $7.98 million in the first quarter. Gaming and property-related operations contribute a substantial share of Belle’s overall income, as CODM remains the main driver. Belle earned an additional $9.70 million in lease income from the CODM site under a long-term lease with Melco Resorts and Entertainment (Philippines) Corporation. This pushed Belle’s total revenues to $23.3 million for Q1 FY2021, a 9 percent year-over-year increase. The revenue growth can be attributed to both gaming and non-gaming streams. Tagaytay Highlands’ revenue rose 57% to $2.4 million. The utilities segment also reported an 18 percent revenue increase, reaching $1.2 million. In contrast to Belle’s performance, Pacific Online Systems Corporation (POSC)—in which Premium Leisure holds a 50.1 percent stake—generated approximately $2.10 million in revenue, remaining consistent with the previous year. Despite Belle’s success, the broader gaming sector in the Philippines is under pressure from a surge in online gaming and shifting tourism patterns, which are negatively impacting land-based casino performance. Belle’s core asset remains CODM, supporting its unique operating model that combines gaming participation, lease revenue, and property development. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Lawrence Ho said: We have also finished evaluating strategic alternatives for COD Manila. While we considered various options, none of them would fully realize the property’s value and potential. We are confident that business will rebound, and we may revaluate the situation in the futureem> This article is provided by a third-party. Lawsuit Alleges Meta Failed to Curb Scam Ads on Facebook, Instagram

(AsiaGameHub) -   Meta is facing a lawsuit from the Consumer Federation of America (CFA), which alleges the company has misled users regarding its management of fraudulent advertisements on Facebook and Instagram. The lawsuit contends that Meta permitted scam advertisements, including those promoting illegal gambling, in violation of consumer protection laws. The case centers on deceptive advertising practices rather than outright fraud, citing examples such as fake government payment notifications, "free iPhone" offers, and other misleading ads identified within Meta's ad library. Meta has refuted these accusations. Company spokesperson Chris Sgro stated that "these allegations misrepresent the reality of their work and they will fight them." According to Ben Winters, it remains easy to encounter objectionable advertisements. For instance, searches for ads related to terms like 'free phone' and 'stimulus check' revealed numerous questionable advertisements. An investigation also found that many active ads are being promoted in a manner that directs users to dubious financial schemes. However, Meta has not clarified whether these types of advertisements contravene their policies. The CFA is seeking compensatory damages, the return of alleged profits, and a revision of Meta's advertising policy enforcement. Winters believes that more stringent enforcement would help deter repeat offenders and prevent misleading advertisements from reaching users before they are exposed to them. Spokesperson Chris Sgro said: We aggressively combat scams across our platforms to protect people and businesses. Last year alone, we removed over 159 million scam ads, 92 percent of which we took down before anyone reported them, and took down 10.9 million accounts on Facebook and Instagram associated with criminal scam centers. Meta's substantial size has drawn increased scrutiny. Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are among the largest social networks in the United States, offering advertisers access to a vast audience. Internal documents reportedly indicate that Meta's platforms are a significant venue for global online scams, with one estimate suggesting it is "much easier to advertise scams on Meta platforms compared to Google." Another internal source estimates that approximately 10.1% of overall revenue, equating to roughly $16 billion, is derived from scam-related or prohibited advertising. Meta has characterized this figure as "a very rough estimate and overly broad." This article is provided by a third-party. Betsson Focused on Latin American Growth, Excludes UK from Investment Strategy

(AsiaGameHub) -   Betsson is opting to avoid several major Western European gambling hubs due to recent regulatory shifts and operational hurdles, according to CEO Pontus Lindwall. During a recent appearance on the iGaming Daily podcast, Lindwall discussed the company's first-quarter financial results. Total group revenue for the period fell 3% year-on-year to €285.3m, compared to €294m in Q1 2025. B2B earnings saw a sharp decline to €51m from €90m in the prior year's quarter, while B2C revenue grew by 15%. Despite the overall dip, Betsson saw double-digit year-on-year growth in both Western Europe (€61.3m) and Latin America (€93m), maintaining momentum in those regions despite broader challenges. Lindwall remarked: “The Latin American market is somewhat behind Europe in its development cycle. This means online gaming hasn't fully penetrated the region yet, leading us to believe there is significant structural growth potential in many of these markets moving forward.” Pontus Lindwall, Chief Executive Officer of Betsson. Image: Betsson “We hold strong positions in several of these territories. We are clearly the leader in Argentina and well-placed elsewhere, supported by established brand recognition and proven technology. We remain very positive about our future in the region,” he added. Latin American revenue rose 24.7% year-on-year to €93m (up from €74.5m in Q1 2025), with gains in Colombia and Peru, while performance in Argentina remained stable compared to the previous year. In Western Europe, revenue increased by 10.3% to €61.3m (up from €55.6m in Q1 2025). Italy hit record revenue levels and France showed growth, though Belgium experienced a decline. These results come even as Betsson remains absent from the UK and Germany, two of the region's largest markets. Betsson maintains distance from the UK Lindwall noted that the regulatory path taken by some European nations has made them unviable for the company's operations. “Western Europe as a whole is an unfortunate situation in many respects. We’ve seen regulatory shifts that actually work against the goals of creating a properly regulated and taxable gaming sector,” he explained. “As a major player, Betsson is largely staying out of several of Europe’s biggest markets, including the UK and Germany. While these are powerful nations with deep gaming traditions and strong economies, we do not view them as investible for our company, so we are leaving those opportunities to others. “The environment in Italy and certain other markets is different, offering a better climate for investment and growth. However, much of Europe is now highly saturated, which isn't the case everywhere else,” he continued. In other regions, Nordic revenue fell 16.9% to €31.4m (from €37.8m in Q1 2025), while Central & Eastern Europe and Central Asia (CEECA) dropped 21.8% to €95.7m (from €122.3m). Revenue from the rest of the world reached €3.9m. Betsson’s Q1 casino earnings decreased 4% to €203.8m, while sportsbook revenue saw a slight uptick to €80.2m. The company's EBITDA fell 36% to €50m, with margins narrowing to 17.5%. EBIT dropped 47% to €34m, and net income also declined by 47% to €25.5m. During the podcast, Lindwall also touched on Betsson’s Canadian strategy following the acquisition of Rhino Entertainment and discussed the company's preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Guru in clipping highlights rising threat from black market advertising

(AsiaGameHub) -   Social media platforms are growing increasingly saturated with anonymous accounts sharing the same viral clips. At first glance, there may seem to be no clear pattern to why these accounts post identical videos. But a closer look reveals an entire industry of “clippers”, who are paid to edit and distribute content across social media platforms, with their earnings directly tied to the number of views each clip receives. Anthony Fujiwara, Founder of Clipping, one of the companies leading the industrialization of this content strategy, told Forbes that top-earning clippers can make between $30,000 and $40,000 per month. Clipping can charge clients as little as a few cents per million views, meaning advertising costs through this clipping model are far lower than through other traditional advertising channels. Brands or content creators will often share content via Google Drive for clippers to download and repost through their own personal accounts. He stated in his interview with Forbes: “I remember a traditional platform charging $25,000 for one million views. For us, a million views could cost somewhere between just a hundred dollars to a thousand dollars.” According to Bloomberg, Clipping generated $7.7m in revenue last year, and counts major industry giants including Netflix and Amazon Prime among its largest clients. But how does gambling connect to this practice? Multiple studies have repeatedly shown that illegal gambling operators target players through social media, since the platform faces far less regulation than other advertising channels. The chance to go viral on social media also makes clipping a far more lucrative opportunity for many gambling brands. In previous cases, clips of streamers such as Adin Ross playing on platforms like Stake have been shared thousands of times over by fan accounts, boosting the brand’s visibility to potentially millions of potential players. For policymakers and regulators in markets such as the UK, where MPs are currently pushing for stricter gambling advertising rules, this clipping practice creates a major challenge. Social media clips featuring the logos of Stake and fellow crypto casino Rainbet also appeared in Louis Theroux’s documentary investigating the ‘manosphere’, and were almost certainly produced by editors working under a similar model to Clipping’s. The people posting these clips are based all around the world. Fujiwara noted that Clipping’s top earners are based in countries including India, the Philippines and Serbia – meaning that enforcement agencies are often dependent on social media platforms themselves to take action. However, already this year, the Gambling Commission’s Executive Director of Research and Policy, Tim Miller, has publicly criticized Meta for failing to crack down on illegal gambling advertising. For social media companies, there is little incentive to remove these short clips, because the views they generate also create a revenue stream for the platform itself. Furthermore, even if platforms do ban accounts or remove content, the highly profitable nature of clipping means content posters will simply create new accounts to continue their work. The whole process effectively becomes a game of whack-a-mole. Forbes noted that the majority of clipping campaigns do not include required paid promotion labels, as mandated by government regulators such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). However, the general consensus is that the FTC is unlikely to take enforcement action against small micro-influencers posting these clips. In a recent Westminster Hall Debate, Dr Beccy Cooper MP, Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Gambling Reform, stated that she believes black market advertising can be tackled – pointing to the success of the UK’s crackdown on the black market tobacco industry after the country introduced new regulations around the sale and promotion of tobacco products. But making a meaningful impact on the scale of black market advertising across social media comes with inherently different challenges, given that the entire activity takes place in a digital space. For example, unlike illicit tobacco suppliers, black market advertisers do not need a physical location to store stock, meaning they can easily stay well out of reach of enforcement action. Newly released research confirms that advertising spend for black market operators in the UK is set to keep rising, while spend for the regulated gambling sector is declining, so brands like Stake and Rainbet have an entire army of editors ready to share viral content featuring their logos with a captivated audience of millions. Is Japan Left With No Choice But a Last-Resort Measure Against Illegal Gambling?

(AsiaGameHub) -   Authorities in Japan are considering all available measures, including the potential implementation of website blocking, as illegal gambling activities in 2025 have reached unprecedented levels. According to reports from The Japan News, these proposals are currently under discussion by the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry and have been recognized as a viable strategy for reducing participation in online gambling platforms. However, there are ongoing concerns that enacting these measures could contravene provisions within Japan’s constitution pertaining to the ‘secrecy of any means of communication’. Consequently, the Ministry views website blocking as a measure of last resort, to be employed only if other strategies prove ineffective in combating online gambling. Last week, the National Police Agency reported that enforcement actions were taken against 317 individuals in 2025, marking a record high since data collection began in 2018. Among these individuals, 221 were arrested in connection with online casinos across 158 cases. Online gambling is strictly forbidden in Japan. Nevertheless, data from the NPA estimates that approximately 2 million people engage in online gambling annually, primarily by accessing overseas websites. The total amount wagered by players is estimated to exceed ¥1.24 trillion (£5.76bn) each year. Is website blocking inevitable? The panel tasked with analyzing the implementation of website blocking has stressed that specific criteria must be met before it can be approved. These rules must be deemed necessary and effective, demonstrate a clear societal benefit, and the technical specifications of the blocking system must satisfy the panel’s requirements. Given apprehensions about potential government overreach, which would necessitate internet service providers monitoring all user access, the use of website blocking has been infrequently considered. Currently, such restrictions are exclusively in place to prevent access to child pornography websites. Joji Shishido, a Professor at the University of Tokyo specializing in constitutional law, informed the panel: “Blocking websites is the final action to be taken within the broader effort to eliminate the harm caused by online casinos. “If the measure is to be implemented, the government must adopt a significantly more serious approach to establishing the necessary infrastructure.” Last year, Japan’s government introduced new legislation aimed at combating unlicensed gambling by prohibiting the operation and use of such sites, as well as their promotion through banner advertisements, affiliate marketing, and social media posts. The report indicated that these efforts have shown ‘a certain degree of effectiveness’. However, it is evident that there is a demand for more impactful changes, which website blocking could provide. New Zealand Set to Launch Regulated Online Casino Market Following Bill Passage

(AsiaGameHub) -   New Zealand has successfully passed its Online Casino Gambling Bill through its third and final parliamentary reading, bringing the nation closer to establishing a regulated online casino market with the potential for up to 15 operator licences. The legislation, championed by Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden, is now set to receive Royal Assent, which is anticipated on 1 May. This new law addresses a long-standing deficiency in the Gambling Act 2003, which previously permitted offshore operators to offer services to New Zealand residents without the obligation of obtaining licences or paying taxes. Minister van Velden stated: The Bill… aligns with the coalition agreement by closing the gambling tax loophole and mandating that licensed online casino operators contribute taxes, mirroring the obligations of other businesses operating within New Zealand. Under the new regulatory framework, the Department of Internal Affairs will manage a competitive process to grant up to 15 licences. This process will involve stages such as expressions of interest, a selection phase that could include auctions or tenders, and final applications. Prospective operators will be required to meet stringent criteria concerning ownership transparency, regulatory compliance, and player protection. The initial validity period for these licences will be three years. Minister van Velden further elaborated: “Within the new framework, up to 15 licences will be made available through a competitive selection process. Licensed operators will be obligated to exclude individuals identified as problem gamblers and adhere to strict requirements for harm prevention and consumer protection.” The timeline for the licensing process is projected to commence in July 2026, with applications due by 1 December of the same year. Successful operators are expected to launch their services by 1 July 2027. Any operators that do not submit an application by the stipulated deadline will be required to cease operations in the market. A significant aspect of this legislation is its extraterritorial application, meaning it will extend to all online casino services offered to New Zealand users, irrespective of the operator's geographical location. Minister van Velden commented: These measures will ensure that New Zealand law governs all online casino gambling accessible within the country, regardless of operator location, thereby eliminating opportunities for evasion and enhancing the regulator's capacity to oversee and enforce compliance among international operators. The bill also introduces enhanced enforcement mechanisms, including the power to issue take-down notices, impose fines of up to NZ$5 million for significant violations, and prohibit credit-based gambling. Operators must implement age verification to ensure users are at least 18 years old, establish player protection measures, and maintain formal complaint resolution systems. Furthermore, the legislation includes provisions for allocating a portion of the generated gambling revenue to support community initiatives, such as sports clubs and grassroots organisations. Prominent operators, including Entain and SkyCity Entertainment Group, are reportedly making preparations for the forthcoming licensing competition as the nation progresses towards establishing its inaugural fully regulated online casino market. Panel Backs Framework to Block Illegal iGaming Sites in Japan

(AsiaGameHub) -   In Japan, an expert committee has proposed a draft framework that would permit authorities to block illegal online casino sites—potentially the start of a series of stricter regulations targeting illegal gambling activities. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications initiated this framework and believes blocking access to offshore gambling sites could help reduce the number of young people harmed by gambling. Several legal and constitutional questions must also be addressed before advancing any measures related to blocking illegal online gambling or other unlawful gambling practices. Expert panel members have expressed support for tougher actions against illegal operators, as these entities are highly exploitative and cannot be effectively controlled under existing regulations. Noriko Tanaka, a panel member and head of the Society Concerned About Gambling Addiction, stated: These organizations are truly malicious. Young people can easily fall victim to them, so I strongly hope they will be blocked. The framework concludes that conditions for introducing blocking measures may already exist, given the widespread access to online gambling sites and the continued growth of unlicensed platforms. Under the proposed framework, telecommunications providers will be required to block access to identified illegal sites. In addition to potential access blocking, the framework raises privacy concerns: telecommunications providers would need to monitor individual users’ internet traffic to detect attempts to access blocked sites, which sparks worries about surveillance and possible violations of Japan’s communications privacy laws. Experts have emphasized that these risks must be carefully evaluated, and the report views internet blocking as a last-resort measure. Joji Shishido commented: Blocking websites is the final step in the overall effort to eliminate harm from online casinos. If this measure is implemented, the government needs to take a far more serious approach to building the necessary system. Japan has already introduced alternative measures, including banning social media promotion of illegal casinos and collaborating with foreign jurisdictions to limit access. These steps have shown “a certain degree of effectiveness,” per the report, though access to offshore sites remains widespread. Data from Blask indicates that interest in online gambling may already be declining. User activity dropped significantly throughout 2025 and into early 2026, alongside a fall in estimated market revenue—suggesting demand could be cooling even before stricter controls are introduced. India announces new online gaming regulations and regulator ahead of May rollout

(AsiaGameHub) -   India will implement a new regulatory framework for online gaming starting May 1, following a notification from the Ministry of Electronics & IT. The rules intend to curb risks related to real-money gambling while introducing more structure and oversight to the sector. The framework originates from the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025, which Parliament passed in August last year. It covers both real-money gaming and non-monetary games, with the objective of enhancing regulation while supporting the growth of esports and social gaming. A key feature is the establishment of the Online Gaming Authority of India, which will act as the central regulatory body. It will maintain a registry of online money games, handle complaints and appeals, issue guidelines, and coordinate with banks and enforcement agencies. The authority will also supervise compliance across the sector. The new system introduces clear criteria for classifying online money games, based on factors like stakes, potential rewards, and revenue models. It also sets up a registration framework for esports and certain social gaming categories, while many non-real-money games will stay outside mandatory registration unless specifically required. User protection measures are a core component of the rules, including age verification, parental controls, complaint mechanisms, and a two-tier dispute resolution system designed to strengthen accountability. With the rollout approaching, India is moving toward a more structured regulatory environment for online gaming. The government states that the framework is designed to balance industry growth with consumer protection, particularly by reducing financial and social risks linked to money-based gaming platforms. Cambodia closes 91 casinos in widened crackdown on cyber scams

(AsiaGameHub) -   In an intensified effort against cybercrime, Cambodia has ordered the closure of 91 casinos implicated in online scams as part of a wider enforcement campaign targeting illegal gambling and fraud operations. Authorities have reported that over 250 scam-related facilities were shut down in the nine months leading up to December, with numerous raids conducted on premises suspected of engaging in online fraud and operating illegally. Additionally, more than 13,000 foreign nationals were deported, and over 240,000 others reportedly left the country voluntarily between mid-January and mid-April as part of this crackdown. This action follows increased pressure from China, whose Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, visited Phnom Penh on April 22 and urged the government to implement more stringent measures to curb cross-border gambling and cyber scams. According to state media, the 91 casinos targeted for closure are either directly involved in scam activities or facilitate online fraud networks, leading to suspicions that they may be serving as fronts for cybercriminal enterprises. In addition to stricter enforcement of existing gambling laws, new legislation has been enacted, including an anti-scam law that took effect on April 6. This law mandates severe penalties, including life imprisonment for serious offenses of this nature. Under the directive of Hun Sen, Cambodia has made significant strides in combating cybercrime, demonstrating its capacity to more effectively regulate its gambling industry, largely in response to pressure from China, the United States, and various other regional entities. Brazil Shuts Down 27 Prediction Market Operators Over Unlicensed Betting Activities

(AsiaGameHub) -   Brazilian authorities have prohibited 27 platforms that function under "prediction market" models, having concluded they were essentially providing betting services without a license. The Ministry of Finance issued the prohibition after an investigation found these firms were marketing their services as investment or derivative products tied to wagering, barring them from conducting business in Brazil. These banned platforms allowed users to place bets on a wide array of real-world events, such as: future elections; economic patterns; sports results; TV show outcomes; and developments in international relations. This ban aligns with a recent resolution from the National Monetary Council on April 24, which limited derivatives trading to economic and financial indicators overseen by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Officials added that these organizations' business models are "operating at the fringes of the finance industry" and fail to meet the standards required for a licensed betting operation or a regulated financial institution. Additionally, authorities raised concerns about the potential for customers to accumulate excessive debt. The prohibition applies to both domestic and international firms named in the announcement, such as Kalshi and Polymarket. Consequently, Brazilian consumers will face limited access to these companies' services. For all the affected companies, this ruling significantly shifts Brazil's previous approach to new betting-like models, compelling them to either adhere to local regulations or exit the Brazilian market. Boyd Gaming Announces Q1 Revenue Increase with Profit Downfall

(AsiaGameHub) -   Boyd Gaming announced $997.4 million in revenue for the first quarter of 2026, a 0.6% year-over-year increase, driven by consistent customer activity and ongoing investments across its property portfolio. Net income totaled $105.5 million, down 5.3% from the same period last year, while adjusted earnings fell 10.6% to $123.1 million. Adjusted EBITDAR also declined by 6% to $317.4 million. The South and Midwest segment posted positive earnings and revenue results, largely due to improved activity from core customers and more favorable year-over-year comparisons (stemming from significant weather disruptions in the prior fiscal year). Property investments also contributed to revenue and profit generation in these segments. Conversely, the Las Vegas Locals segment faced challenges from lower demand levels paired with ongoing construction delays at the Suncoast property. Downtown Las Vegas results remained stable thanks to sustained strong visitation by Hawaiian customers, though overall traffic to the area continues to decline. Boyd’s online segment continues to grow, fueled by its online casino operations and third-party restricted access agreements. The Managed and Other segments benefited from higher management fee revenues, most notably from the management of Sky River Casino in California. During the second quarter of 2026, Boyd opened its Cadence Crossing Casino in Las Vegas and continued progress on its $750 million resort development in Virginia. The company also secured approval to expand and upgrade its Par-A-Dice property in Illinois. Boyd returned approximately $170 million to shareholders in the second quarter via dividends and share repurchases—including $155 million in repurchased shares and a quarterly dividend of $0.20 per share. In addition, the board approved a $500 million expansion of the share repurchase program in April. As of March 31, 2026, Boyd held $372.7 million in cash on hand and had total debt of $2.3 billion. President and CEO of Boyd Gaming, Keith Smith said: Looking ahead, we believe our strong balance sheet, diversified portfolio, balanced approach to capital allocation, and experienced management team all position us well to continue creating long-term value for our shareholders. PG Soft launches new Funky Fortunez slot

(AsiaGameHub) -   PG Soft, a leading company in the world of digital mobile games, has launched its latest creation, Funky Fortunez. Funky Fortunez is a 4x4 symbol combination slot featuring Prize symbols that can award wins of up to 500 times the bet amount. The game is set against a vibrant, neon-lit backdrop and infused with hip-hop energy, drawing inspiration from street culture and the excitement of the dancefloor, elements that are woven into every spin. The Prize Symbol is a key feature that makes Funky Fortunez a standout game. During any spin, winning symbols activate their positions. The first activation marks the position, and the second transforms it into a Prize symbol. When no more winning combinations are present, each Prize symbol awards a prize ranging from 0.2x to 8x the bet. Before any Prize symbol pays out, it has the potential to be upgraded to a Gold Prize symbol or a Platinum Prize symbol. Gold Prize symbols offer prizes between 10x and 50x, while Platinum Prize symbols can award between 100x and 500x, meaning every spin holds the possibility of greater rewards. Landing three Scatter symbols on the reels triggers the Free Spins Feature with 10 free spins, with each additional Scatter granting two more spins. Once free spins are activated, any marked symbol positions and Prize symbols remain locked on the reels for the entire feature. The Prize Upgrade Feature can be triggered on every winning free spin, and free spins can also be retriggered. A spokesperson for PG Soft stated: Funky Fortunez is a tribute to the hip-hop genre, which we believe will remain popular for a considerable time. The Prize Symbol mechanic is the driving force of the game, as players aim for substantial returns of up to 500x per symbol, with a maximum win potential of 2,000x the initial bet. Tangled threads and political speculation taint the UK gambling debate.

(AsiaGameHub) -   A vigorous discussion during this week’s Westminster Hall debate on gambling advertising has raised questions about UK MPs’ grasp of the gambling industry’s complexities. Alex Ballinger, a Labour MP and Co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Gambling Reform (GRAPPG), faced scrutiny from Conservative MP Esther McVey regarding the accuracy of statistics he presented on gambling advertising. McVey, whose husband is former Tory MP and ex-Star Sports Chairman Philip Davies, inquired whether Ballinger, who has advocated for stricter controls on gambling advertising, had been contacted by the Gambling Commission concerning his use of their data. Ballinger consistently denied this, asserting that any challenges to his figures originated from "members of the gambling industry." However, the UKGC’s Log of Requested Corrections indicates that Ballinger was indeed contacted on three separate occasions regarding the misuse of statistics. In each instance, the UKGC’s concerns pertained to an "incorrect reference to the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) as a measure of addiction." Following a debate on 5 February 2025, the UKGC also communicated with Ballinger and fellow MP Jim Shannon regarding their practice of "scaling up problem gambling data to population numbers." Dr Beccy Cooper MP, Vice Chair of the GRAPPG and a participant in the debate, has also been contacted twice by the UKGC concerning the "misuse of statistics" and the extrapolation of problem gambling data to population figures. Cooper defended her position by stating she had provided the UKGC with evidence supporting her use of the statistics as the "best evidence that we have." McVey voiced her apprehension that these communications from the UKGC cast doubt on the reliability of the data cited by MPs like Ballinger and Cooper in Parliament. It is important to note that Ballinger may not be aware of the UKGC's correspondence. Nevertheless, providing misleading information to Parliament can result in sanctions from the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner. The GRAPPG’s most recent report contends that advertising reforms in the UK have been insufficient, leading to young children being exposed to gambling at detrimental levels. The report cites UKGC data indicating that 79% of children have encountered gambling advertisements. Ballinger repeatedly cited a figure of £2 billion to highlight the expenditure on advertising by operators in the UK. This figure is consistent with research from marketing intelligence firm WARC, which forecasts that the industry will spend £1.9 billion by October 2026 across both regulated and unregulated sectors. During the debate, Ballinger did not differentiate between these sectors, stating that the funds were being used in a "deliberate and sustained effort to drive engagement, normalise gambling and grow the market, including by creating future generations of gamblers." Ballinger also refuted the claims made in the 2023 Gambling White Paper, which stated there is no direct link between gambling advertising and problem gambling, a point raised by Charlie Dewhirst MP. “I will not accept that,” he stated. “Having met lots of people with lived experience of gambling and having seen the evidence in our report, I know there is a clear link between gambling advertising and halting the recovery of people with gambling addictions.” However, problem gambling rates are not directly correlated with the speed of recovery for problem gamblers. Furthermore, Ballinger’s assertions appear to be primarily based on anecdotal evidence. While concerns regarding the extent of gambling advertising are understandable, these exchanges underscore why stakeholders continue to harbour doubts about the intentions of policymakers and their comprehension of the industry. In addition to the two MPs mentioned, MPs from the DUP, Liberal Democrats, and Green Party have also received notifications from the UKGC regarding the misuse of statistics. The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), the new prevention commissioner, has also received such notifications. In his newsletter, Dan Waugh of Regulus Partners observed that if Ballinger is unaware of the notifications, it suggests that the UKGC has not followed up on its communications. This situation should be a cause for concern across the industry, as the primary body responsible for collaborating with the government on regulatory changes appears not to have prioritized adequately addressing issues related to the statistics used in debates concerning the future of gambling in the UK. BGC appoints Gamesys director and confirms leadership change

(AsiaGameHub) -   The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) Board is adopting a new leadership structure, with the Chair role now set to rotate among its members for 12-month terms. Consequently, Kane Purdy, the Managing Director of Gamesys Operations Limited, will be the inaugural non-executive Chair under this new system. Purdy's previous leadership on the GamProtect initiative, a single customer view project aimed at improving player protection and industry standards, makes him well-suited for the position. Regarding his appointment, he stated: “It is an honour and a delight to assume the role of Chair of the Betting and Gaming Council. “With 20 years of experience in the sector, I recognise the critical need for collective action to address challenges, elevate standards, and guarantee the continued success of the regulated industry. “I am eager to collaborate with Grainne and the team, alongside members from throughout the industry, to advance the significant progress already achieved and contribute to defining the BGC's future path.” Purdy takes over from Executive Chair Michael Dugher, who departed from the BGC earlier this year following a six-year tenure. Grainne Hurst, CEO of the Betting and Gaming Council, remarked: “Kane possesses a wealth of experience, knowledge, and skill for this position, developed over twenty years in the industry. “He is a greatly esteemed leader with a profound comprehension of both the opportunities and duties involved in working within a regulated framework. He has also shown a steadfast dedication to cooperation, aiding in the advancement of projects that bolster standards and safeguards throughout the sector. “I anticipate working in close partnership with him as we persist in advocating for our members, improving standards, and backing a well-regulated industry that benefits consumers, the economy, and communities nationwide.” This change in leadership occurs as the industry seeks a stronger mainstream voice, amid increasing pressure for stricter regulations and as numerous operators face pressure from the UK market due to 40% tax rates.
